How to Place a Tax-Exempt Gift Basket Order Online
Qualified organizations and customers with valid exemption documentation can now apply for tax-exempt purchasing directly through 5280Gourmet.
Ordering gift baskets for a university, school, government office, nonprofit organization, reseller, or another tax-exempt customer can involve more than simply entering an exemption number during checkout.
As the seller, we must receive and review valid exemption documentation before assigning tax-exempt status to a customer account. In the past, this process often required phone calls and emails. We have now made it easier by providing a secure online application.
Qualified customers can create an account, upload their exemption certificate, and submit the required information online. After approval, applicable sales tax will be removed automatically from qualifying orders placed through that approved account.
Start With Our Public Tax-Exempt Guide
Our public guide explains the complete process, required documentation, approval steps, and frequently asked questions.
Who May Apply for Tax-Exempt Purchasing?
Tax-exempt purchasing is available only to customers who have valid exemption documentation for qualifying purchases. Depending on the circumstances, applicants may include:
- Schools, colleges, and universities
- Government departments and public agencies
- Nonprofit and charitable organizations
- Religious organizations
- Businesses purchasing eligible goods for resale
- Other organizations with valid exemption certificates or licenses
Having an organizational or business account does not automatically make every purchase tax exempt. The customer must provide valid documentation, and the purchase must qualify under the exemption being used.
How the Online Application Works
Step 1: Create a Customer Account
Tax-exempt status must be connected to a registered 5280Gourmet customer account. New customers should begin by creating an account using the email address they plan to use when ordering.

Step 2: Sign In to Your Account
If you already have a customer account, sign in before opening the tax-exempt application. This ensures that your application and any approved tax-exempt status are connected to the correct account.
Sign in to your existing customer account.
Step 3: Complete the Application
After signing in, complete the online application and provide the requested information. This includes:
- Your organization’s legal name
- Your exemption or license number
- The state that issued the exemption
- A contact phone number
- The certificate expiration date, when applicable
- A copy of your current exemption certificate or license
Customers who are already signed in can proceed to the secure tax-exempt application.
Step 4: Allow Us to Review the Application
Our staff will review the submitted information and documentation. Applications may require additional information if the certificate is incomplete, expired, illegible, or does not support the requested exemption.
Once the application is approved, the registered account will be assigned tax-exempt status for qualifying purchases.
Please Receive Approval Before Ordering
Do not place your order until your application has been approved. Orders placed before approval, through guest checkout, or under a different customer account may include applicable sales tax.
Placing an Order After Approval
Once your account has been approved, always sign in before adding products to your cart and completing checkout. Qualifying orders placed through the approved account will receive the appropriate tax treatment automatically.
The approved status is connected to the specific customer account used during the application. If another employee or department places an order using a different account or guest checkout, the exemption may not be recognized.
Customers are responsible for using their exemption only for eligible purchases and for providing updated documentation when a certificate expires or changes.
Tax-Exempt Corporate and Multi-Recipient Gift Orders
5280Gourmet also assists businesses, universities, nonprofits, government offices, and other organizations with larger gift-basket programs.
If you need to send gifts to multiple recipients, you do not have to enter every shipment separately through ordinary checkout. Our corporate gifting service can help with product selection, multiple delivery addresses, enclosure-card messages, local delivery, and nationwide shipping.
For larger programs, customers can provide recipient information through a spreadsheet, making multi-address ordering easier and reducing repeated data entry.
